The Second Stage

Merivale Bridge, opened 18 November 1978, was deemed as "the start of the second stage in the history of Queensland Railways" by the then Premier. It links the southside and northern railway lines together pretty much and crosses the Brisbane River. Before it was erected, people travelling on the southern lines had to get off at South Brisbane Station and tram or walk it to the CBD across the river. It now also allows trains from south of the border to come further up into Queensland and consequently the interstate station was moved from South Brisbane Station across the river to Roma Street Station, the following station. It's also won a bunch of awards
